John,
Last night, in his first State of the Union address before a divided Congress, President Biden called on Congress to enact an agenda that invests in our communities -- paid for by making the wealthy pay their fair share.
He called for Congress to pass the expanded Child Tax Credit, which I've been fighting for as well. In 2021 it provided monthly payments to families of between $250 - $300 per child, lifting millions of children out of poverty -- until Congress let it die.
Last night, the president also called on Congress to pass the Billionaire Minimum Income Tax, which would ensure households worth over $100 million are paying at least a 20% tax on their full income each year, not just when they feel like it. This would raise at least $360 billion in new revenue over 10 years.
The president called for replacing lead pipes in homes and schools across the country -- in our shared fight for water as a human right.
At a time when House Republicans are passing bills that would terminate healthcare coverage for millions of people (including children), while allowing their millionaire and billionaire campaign donors to continue dodging taxes -- we’re fighting for an agenda that puts working people and low-wealth families first.
At last night’s address, my guest was Shanay Watson-Whittaker, an abortion rights advocate who helped pass Michigan’s constitutional amendment that enshrined abortion rights into law in our state.
From abortion rights to water rights to healthcare rights to civil rights, each of these issues is interconnected in our struggle for justice and equity. Will you pitch in $5 today to fight back against a Republican agenda that puts billionaire greed over the rights and wages of working people?
