Did you watch last night’s State of the Union? If not, I encourage you to check out NPR’s recap [[link removed]] (and if you’re interested in my live reactions, take a scroll through my Twitter feed [[link removed]] from last night!).
I won’t add much to what was admittedly a long speech - but I had to take a minute to say 👏YES👏 to President Biden. Watching him stand on the dais, with Vice President Harris behind him, making our values and priorities clear to the entire world, was incredibly moving.
It can be easy to get caught up in the day to day of politics - from cable news and partisan back-and-forth to the creeping demands of re-election campaigns - but for me, the State of the Union offers a respite from all that. Not only has the State of the Union been happening as long as our country has existed (it’s Constitutionally mandated!), watching it each year serves as a reminder that America has an immense opportunity - and an immense responsibility - to lead the way on the global stage.
Last night, it was clear that we are in very good hands as we navigate that challenge - and that the state of the Union is STRONG ! We celebrated the creation of 12 million (!!) jobs, our lowest unemployment rate since 1969, and the historic investments this Administration has made in our nation’s infrastructure.
I was particularly glad to hear President Biden call out some of the issues I care about most deeply and prioritize in my work: affordable child care for all, reproductive rights and bodily autonomy, and supporting our veterans.
President Biden and Vice President Harris have spent two years healing our nation, renewing hope, and rebuilding democracy. With their leadership, we can keep up the fight to support kids and families across the country.
Here’s to another, even brighter, year ahead!
