After the Dobbs decision, Republicans in Washington State claimed that the right to an abortion was settled. They claimed that, if they won the majority, they would not roll back the protections enshrined in Washington law since 1991. Republicans lied.
Republicans in the state legislature have introduced a number of bills attacking abortion – including a 24-week ban in the State Senate. But thanks to our strong Democratic majority, these bills will go nowhere. Instead, the state legislature is strengthening abortion access.
Senator Annette Cleveland introduced legislation helping to reduce out-of-pocket costs that often prevent people from seeking the health care they need. And Senator Trudeau has a bill that will protect patients who receive abortion care in Washington from criminal proceedings in another state – particularly important as thousands of people travel here from places where abortion is now illegal.
Both of these bills have passed out of committee, and are expected to pass out of the Senate because our Democratic Senators know that protecting and expanding abortion rights matter to the people of Washington. Our caucus has made it a priority. This is the leadership you can expect from us.
Your support of Senate Democrats last year paved the way for us to pass historic reproductive rights legislation. Thank you.
