John, I had the incredible honor to deliver a response to the State of the Union on behalf of the Working Families Party.
After President Biden's address to the nation, I followed up with my vision for a government that has our backs.
I talked about working families and how we could better serve them by focusing on the issues that matter the most: affordable housing, immigration reform, quality healthcare, childcare, eldercare, and more!
I ran for Congress because I understood the struggles working families faced.
And it's not because I read about them, I experienced them firsthand.
My parents emigrated from Guatemala thirty years ago. My mother risked her life and swam across the Rio Grande while she was pregnant with me, all for a chance to give her family a better life than the one she was leaving behind.
And we were still by no means rich. As a kid, my family lived above a church in Humboldt Park, exchanging hard work for cheaper rent. We regularly volunteered at soup kitchens and food pantries, and it was here that I discovered my passion for helping others.
In my short time in Congress, I've learned a lot about how we can better help our communities, but there are still obstacles in the way. Republicans have shown that they are much more interested in petty political games and partisan drama.
My colleagues and I are committed to delivering on our promises for working families. But if we want any chance of getting our legislative agenda through, we're going to need partners on every level – from people in our neighborhoods to people in the Legislature – and it all starts with YOU. As the founder and former director of the Center for Changing Lives, chair of the executive board for the Latin United Community Housing Association (LUCHA) and the Logan Square Neighborhood Association (LSNA), Delia has worked for solutions to many complex problems such as affordable housing, education, and criminal justice.
In 2018, Delia ran for and was elected to the House of Representatives in Illinois' 4th District. Since then, she has passed legislation expanding affordable housing, Medicaid coverage for seniors regardless of immigration status, and creating a Chicago school board. Now, she is part of the Democratic majority leadership team in the House.
Delia fights every day to break the social obstacles that she and many women face. Her passion is to guide and empower women to achieve leadership opportunities in all sectors.
