HAPPENING NOW — a slate of amazing pro-environment, pro-democracy federal judicial nominees is getting passed out of the Judiciary Committee, clearing the way for the Senate to confirm them to lifetime judgeships.

Here’s why this matters: in just a few weeks, the Supreme Court will issue its ruling in Merrill v. Milligan, a critical case that will decide the future of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Court is poised to uphold an egregious racial gerrymander, overruling a lower court that found it disenfranchised Black voters in Alabama, a blatant violation of the law and an assault on all of our voting rights.

Unless the Senate acts to confirm pro-environment, pro-democracy judicial nominees, the federal courts will continue to be dominated by Trump nominees for a generation to come. They’ll issue even more awful decisions, gutting bedrock environmental protections and voting rights by lawlessly advancing even more extreme right-wing policies through the judiciary.

We need to let senators know that delay is no longer an option. They must vote to confirm President Biden’s judicial nominees who will protect our environment and democracy. And that will only happen if our movement demands it.

The Democratic-controlled Senate has done a great job advancing personally and professionally diverse Biden judicial nominees over the last two years, but we need them to pick up the pace. There are over 100 vacancies on the federal bench, and some great nominees have waited more than a year just to get a vote.

President Biden’s nominees are truly historic, Friend. Most of them are women, most are people of color, and most have legal experience working for the people, not just powerful corporate interests. They include public defenders, champions of voting rights, and the potential first public-interest environmental lawyer ever to serve on the federal bench. These nominees have a record of standing up for people — not just corporations.

We need strong, well-qualified judicial nominees now more than ever. Pro-Trump Republicans in Congress and in many states are counting on right-wing judges to further erode Americans’ voting rights and protections for clean air, clean water, and climate action. Those right-wing judges have already had an extreme effect — as we’ve seen federal courts and even the Supreme Court roll back the government’s authority to fight pollution and protect public health, protections for voting rights and abortion access, and more.
