MD School for the Deaf faculty and staff overwhelmingly OK union
Education professionals at the Maryland School for the Deaf have resoundingly chosen to unionize; faculty and staff voted 159-2 to join AFT. “I’m so happy to have collective bargaining here at the school,” said Nicole Goldberg, a teacher at the school. “I feel like we can now have our voices seen and heard and as faculty and staff we can also be a part of our school’s decisions.” AFT-Maryland called the vote “historic” that “empowers education professionals at the school to negotiate pay, benefits, and working conditions at the school, rights that education professionals and state workers respectively already have in Maryland.” AFT-Maryland is a state federation of public employee unions from a wide range of sectors including K-12 education, healthcare, corrections, as well as state and local government employees.

Hopkins grad students vote to unionize
Graduate students across three Johns Hopkins University campuses have voted to unionize. The election, held on Jan. 30 and 31, was organized by Teachers and Researchers United (TRU), which is affiliated with United Electrical Radio, and Machine Workers (UE). The vote overwhelmingly favored unionization — out of 3,335 NLRB-registered voters, 2,053 voted yes and 67 voted no, resulting in a 97% majority and 64% turnout rate. The two-day election took place in Homewood, East Baltimore and Washington, D.C. campuses. “All graduate students feel the overwork to some degree,” said Kory Gaines, a second-year doctoral student in the Political Science department and an organizer for TRU-UE. “We ought to be compensated for being the workforce of the university.” Read more here.
