Monday on MSNBC’s All In ([link removed]) , Rep. Ilhan Omar ([link removed]) (D-MN) said that House Republicans voted for her to be removed from the Foreign Affairs Committee because they did not “believe Muslims or black people should have equal access.”
Omar said, “It precisely has to do with bigotry. If you remember, Marjorie Taylor Greene, herself, in 2019, came to Congress and said she was going to force Rashida Tlaib and I to get sworn in on the Bible because we could not be official unless we did so. She talked about how we were infiltrating Congress as Muslims. You remember Donald Trump coming to Minnesota and saying Somalis were infiltrating your state. These are people who certainly don’t believe Muslim immigrants, immigrants, refugees, and certainly someone who carries all of those identities together should be in the United States, let alone and Congress, and wield any kind of power.”
She continued, “But it’s also something deeper, right? It is this bigoted idea that having access to the legal system to seek justice. They don’t believe Muslims or black people should have equal access here in the United States to our legal system.”
Fact check: her accusation is entirely false and itself bigoted, against Republicans. The Right’s opposition to her, and the justification for her removal from the committee, is entirely because of her long history of anti-American and antisemitic comments, which make her unsuitable, to put it mildly, for the position.

** Omar Emphasizes That America Is a Racist Nation

On May 3, 2021, Omar told ([link removed]) MSNBC host Joy Reid ([link removed]) that she and her fellow black Democrats were becoming exhausted by people who refused to concede that America was a racist nation. “I think there is a lot of emotional exhaustion that many of us who are black lawmakers and black people in public service are experiencing,” said Omar. “Because every single day you know that there are ways to transform the justice system, the policing system, and you have to have conversation[s] with people who want to turn a blind eye to the injustices that exist within our systems, who continue to insist that this country is not a country that is racist, that our systems don’t have racism embedded in them.”
