Washington, D.C. – “What we heard from President Biden tonight built on what so many Americans have learned to be true since he took office: Democrats deliver for the people,” said Congressman Nadler.
“Since taking office, President Biden along with the support of a Democratic Congress has been able to implement historic and meaningful victories for the American people that put working families first from the Inflation Reduction Act, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, to the CHIPS and Science Act.
“Together, we’ve lowered costs by reducing student debt, reducing healthcare premiums, capping the cost of insulin for Medicare recipients, and funding the infrastructure we all rely on. President Biden has proved we can invest in America in a fiscally responsible way that reduces the deficit, without cutting Social Security or Medicare, by finally making the largest corporations and wealthiest Americans begin pay their fair share.
“Despite the strides we’ve made in the last two years, more work must be done to improve Americans’ everyday lives and give working families more breathing room. Congress must reauthorize the Child Tax Credit, make child and home care more accessible, expand affordable housing, and ensure everyone earns a living wage.
“We also must build on the progress I was proud to lead as Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee last Congress. Together, we were able to sign the first gun safety bill in a generation into law. Still, Congress must go further by banning assault weapons and closing loopholes to keep our children safe from the epidemic of gun violence.
“Last Congress, I passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act out of the House to change police culture and reestablish trust between police and the communities they serve. After the horrific killing of Tyre Nichols, and too many others before him, Congress must come to the table with President Biden and build consensus to address police reform in a significant way.
“After the overturning of Roe gutted the constitutional right to abortion, the Judiciary Committee held numerous hearings and passed legislation in the House to restore this fundamental right. This Congress, we must continue this ongoing fight by sending a bill to the President’s desk that protects access to abortion care and safeguards patient data.
“It is my sincere hope that the House Republican Majority will stand with President Biden on the issues that matter most to uplift everyday Americans, rather than scoring political points at their expense. We have come so far together, but our work is not yet done. Congress has an opportunity in these next two years to unite the country and finish the job President Biden has started for the American people, and I look forward to working with him to deliver for New Yorkers and our Nation.”
