Dear Neighbors,?
Last week was another productive week at the Capitol and a week I feel particularly proud to serve in the Minnesota House. In committee, we are working hard on the legislation that Minnesotans have been asking for including paid family leave, common sense gun safety legislation, legalizing cannabis, reproductive healthcare access, public safety legislation, and programs to support our students. Thank you for all the emails, calls, and letters with your thoughts about our work at the Capitol!

Restore the Vote Passes the House Floor
Last Thursday, The House voted to restore the right to vote for formerly incarcerated citizens.?
Voting is a cornerstone of a healthy democracy, and it ensures that citizens have a voice in decisions that impact their lives. By passing this legislation, Minnesota will join 21 other states in restoring the right to vote for folks on probation and parole.?
Democracy works best when everyone has the opportunity to participate and make their voice heard. This is a critical first step of our agenda to protect and strengthen our democracy and I am proud to have voted for this legislation.

Advancing Worker Safety
This week, my legislation [ [link removed] ] to protect warehouse worker safety was heard in the Judiciary Committee.
Work shouldn?t hurt, but for many Minnesotans who work in warehouses, it does. Companies like Amazon have created a quota system that treats warehouse workers like machines, forcing them to work at a grueling pace under constant electronic surveillance. Workers report pushing themselves to the brink, often skipping breaks that would allow them to eat, go to the bathroom, and pray, in order to meet quotas that are constantly changing and often not even shared with employees. One out of every nine of these workers is injured on the job. This is twice as high as the annual injury rate for other warehouses and four times higher than the rate for all workers in private industry.?
This bill protects worker safety in Minnesota warehouses with common sense requirements such as that big warehouse companies notify their workers of any quotas they?re expected to meet, and provide their workers with resources and access to their data on how they're performing those quotas.

Making Juneteenth a Holiday
Last Thursday, the House voted to make Juneteenth a state holiday. June 19 is the date in which slavery is generally understood to have been fully abolished in the United States, following the first public reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas on June 19, 1865. Current law recognizes Juneteenth as an official state observance on the third Saturday in June, but does not recognize it as a full state holiday.
Passing this bill alone will not rectify racial disparities and racism in our nation. We have work to do to ensure that Black Minnesotans have opportunities to succeed and thrive and the Minnesota House DFL Majority is committed to doing that work.
