These companies said they’d stop confining hens in cages. But did they?

Some say silence is golden. But when food companies go silent about their commitment to stop forcing hens to live in extreme confinement, that’s a problem.

That means some could still be profiting from packed cages—even though they said they’d stop by 2023. 

Well, it’s 2023. And without publicly reported cage-free progress in place, I can’t help but wonder: what’s the deal?

You and I know that when a company makes a commitment to treat hens more humanely, it’s vitally important that they follow through. After all, wire battery cages—which house too many hens in painfully cramped confines—are one of the cruelest inventions ever inflicted upon animals.

Ending the use of battery cages means ending the acute suffering of MILLIONS of birds. It’s a historic fight—and our shared movement has reached a critical juncture. With over 200 companies making pledges to stop using battery cages in their operations by 2025, the time for progress is now.

That’s where our 2023 Eggsposé comes in. This new report sheds light on major US food companies that promised to phase out cruel, painful wire cages from their egg supply chains… but haven’t said a word since.

I won’t lie to you—this lack of corporate accountability makes me angry. Hens deserve so. much. better. And yet even when countless smart, friendly chickens are suffering right now, companies have remained silent.

As other corporations begin to show progress, radio silence also puts non-publicly reporting companies behind the times. Last week Viking—a major cruise line—publicly pledged to end the worst forms of confinement for chickens in its global operations! This is a big win for the cage-free movement—and a big deal for countless hens worldwide. Companies like Viking are following through. Excuses just won’t fly.

Progress is possible, and I believe that together we can be a force for change. Through our relentless determination, we can send a strong message that publicly reported progress matters.

It matters to me, it matters to you, and it matters to millions of conscientious consumers who want to make the world a better place.
