Here are some updates from today.

• It's Election Day in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania for the 32nd, 34th and 35th state House districts. The outcome of the special elections for these three vacant seats will determine which party controls the Pennsylvania state House and, consequently, the fate of a proof of ID to vote amendment that already passed the Republican-controlled state Senate.

• Today is also the first day of early voting for the Wisconsin Supreme Court primary. The outcome of this election could determine crucial issues like abortion, gerrymandering and election laws in the Badger State. Learn more here.

• Yesterday, Texas Lieutenant Gov. Dan Patrick (R) called for Harris County to hold new elections due to alleged ballot paper shortages during the November 2022 midterms. Patrick argues that these issues could have affected the outcome of some elections in the populous county, which is home to Houston.

Here’s what to expect coming up.

• In the next few days, the U.S. House will vote on GOP-led resolutions to overturn two bills passed by the Washington, D.C. city council. Learn why Congress can do this here.

• Tonight at 9 p.m. EST, President Joe Biden will deliver his State of the Union address at a vulnerable moment in American democracy.
