John,
In 2021, Donald Trump was banned from Meta’s Facebook and Instagram platforms after January 6th.
Before, during, and after the January 6th insurrection at the Capitol, Donald Trump posted several unsubstantiated claims that the 2020 election had been stolen and praised the violent protesters at the insurrection.
That led to him being banned from Meta’s Facebook and Instagram platforms, with Meta stating that the risks of allowing Trump to continue to use the service were “simply too great.”
But now, Meta is allowing Trump back on the platforms, saying that his threat has “sufficiently receded.”
John, we couldn’t disagree more. The 2023 version of Donald Trump's social media, on his platform “Truth Social,” is an endless stream of perceived grievances and QAnon promotion. He continually and openly backs more violent attempts to put himself back in office. And if he rejoins Facebook and Instagram, he’ll promote violence on those platforms too.
Meta says it doesn’t want to interfere in the democratic process. But what companies like Meta should ensure is that their platforms don't let people like Trump threaten our democracy.

Meta announced that it would reinstate Trump’s accounts sometime over the next few weeks, but if we get enough supporters signed on to our petition, we can show Meta that the people do not want Trump to be able to spread his misinformation and violence on social media.
Allowing Trump back on Facebook and Instagram will allow him to be a threat to our democracy, and we’re determined to do everything in our power to stop it.
