Rep. Clyde Reintroduces SHORT Act to Roll Back ATF’s New Pistol Brace Rule

As you know, I’ve been leading the fight against the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ (ATF) new rule pertaining to firearms with stabilizing braces. Under the ATF’s rule, any pistol braced firearm would be considered an illegal short-barreled rifle — thus making these guns subject to draconian regulations under the National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA). One of the key ways Congress can stop this unlawful measure is through passing legislation to remove the unconstitutional taxation, registration, and regulation in the NFA on certain firearms, including short-barreled rifles and short-barreled shotguns.

Last week, I reintroduced the Stop Harassing Owners of Rifles Today (SHORT) Act to do just that. In the face of President Biden’s unconstitutional tactics and backdoor gun control, the SHORT Act provides a permanent solution to combat the unlawful Pistol Brace Rule and protect Americans’ constitutional right to keep and bear arms. I’m proud to reintroduce this legislation and lead the fight on behalf of all law-abiding gun owners across our great nation against the Biden Administration’s latest gun-grabbing measure.

Returning to Normalcy

Back in September, the President himself admitted that the “pandemic is over.” However, the Biden Administration’s policies have not yet conformed to President Biden’s rhetoric. While the White House senselessly allows pandemic-era initiatives and unconstitutional mandates to continue, House Republicans are determined to return our nation to normalcy.

Last week, we passed several critical bills to get our nation back on the pre-pandemic track that Americans not only want, but deserve. These measures include:

The Pandemic is Over Act: If the President himself can admit that the pandemic is over, it’s time to start acting like it. This bill would immediately end the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency and force the Biden Administration to be transparent with the American people regarding COVID-19.
The Freedom for Health Care Workers Act: This legislation ends the unconstitutional and unscientific vaccine mandate on our health care workers. No American should be forced to choose between the jab and their job.
The SHOW UP Act: Since millions of Americans have returned to the office, it’s time for federal employees to do the same. The SHOW UP Act requires federal agencies to return to pre-pandemic telework levels and submit a report to Congress detailing how pandemic-era telework policies impacted their core missions.

In response to our leadership and commonsense legislation, President Biden announced that he intends to end the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency on May 11th. A planned end to the pandemic is completely nonsensical and reveals both a desperate and failed attempt by the Biden Administration to save face. While President Biden wants to wait three more months, House Republicans have proudly led the way to immediately return to normalcy.

Rep. Clyde Introduces Resolution to Block DC's Dangerous Crime Bill

All Americans deserve a safe capital city. Yet the D.C. Council is advancing a bill, the Revised Criminal Code Act of 2022, to eliminate minimum sentences and reduce maximum penalties for numerous violent criminal offenses. This dangerous and irresponsible measure threatens the well-being of both Washingtonians and visitors — making our nation’s capital city a safe haven for violent criminals. Even Washington D.C.’s Democrat Mayor, Muriel Bowser, vetoed this severely misguided legislation, correctly claiming that it “does not make us safer.” Ultimately, the D.C. Council overrode her veto — solidifying the Left’s soft-on-crime agenda.

In response to the D.C. Council’s radical rewrite of the criminal code, it’s now up to Congress to save our nation’s capital from itself. Last week, I introduced a resolution of disapproval to prevent this pro-crime bill from further inciting crime in Washington. Article 1, Section 8, Clause 17 of our Constitution grants Congress the responsibility and authority to manage Washington’s affairs, which is why we must swiftly pass my resolution of disapproval to stop this insanity in its tracks. I’m proud to lead this fight to ensure that you and your family do not face fear or violence when visiting our nation’s capital, and I look forward to House Republicans passing my commonsense measure on the House floor this week.

Week Ahead

Tonight, President Biden will deliver his State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress. I have no doubt that the President will use this opportunity to attempt to rewrite history by touting his so-called successes and downplaying his laundry list of failures. From wrecking the economy and demolishing our border security to advancing America-last energy policies and promoting weakness on the world stage, Americans know good and well that our nation is on the wrong track under President Biden. I look forward to sharing my thoughts on his address with you next week.

Additionally, House Republicans will vote on measures regarding election integrity and crime in our nation’s capital. Washington, D.C. should lead by example for the country — not enact radical proposals that undermine our democracy and threaten our safety. Our commonsense legislation includes:

H.J. Res. 26: I introduced this resolution of disapproval to block the D.C. Council’s Revised Criminal Code Act of 2022, which eliminates minimum penalties and reduces maximum sentences for numerous violent criminal offenses. All Americans deserve to feel safe in our nation’s capital, which is why I’m proud to lead the fight to ensure the Council’s soft-on-crime bill cannot threaten the safety of residents and visitors in Washington.
H.J. Res. 24: The D.C. Council also advanced illogical legislation to allow illegal aliens to vote in D.C.’s local elections. This bizarre and unlawful measure is an absolute disgrace to our democracy and our Constitution. With this resolution of disapproval, House Republicans can ensure only American citizens vote in D.C.’s elections.
