It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a…Chinese Communist Party spy balloon.
Last Thursday, Montanans spotted an odd object in the sky, which turned out to be a Chinese surveillance balloon. Americans across the country quickly urged the Biden Administration to shoot down the ship, yet the President remained silent and stagnant on the matter for days. Meanwhile, the CCP spy balloon drifted across the continental United States, passing above states and collecting intelligence.
On Saturday, the surveillance device made its way to the Carolina coast, where it was finally shot down over the Atlantic. While I applaud our servicemembers for successfully neutralizing the Chinese spy balloon, it is completely unacceptable that this action was not taken sooner by our Commander-in-Chief.
President Biden and Department of Defense officials claim shooting down the object earlier was not feasible, citing concerns for debris causing damage to citizens and structures. However, we now know that the balloon first entered U.S. airspace over Alaska on January 28th before departing on the 30th. While I look forward to receiving a full briefing on the matter in the coming days, the airship certainly could have been neutralized before allowing it to re-enter our airspace and travel across the country.
Ultimately, the issue isn’t just that the spy balloon flew across the continental U.S. and collected intelligence, but that the object entered our airspace in the first place. Americans deserve a Commander-in-Chief who exudes strength, tenacity, and resolve — not weakness, incompetence, and failed leadership. It’s past time the Biden Administration stopped kowtowing to China and started leading on the world stage.
I’m confident that House Republicans will investigate the troubling CCP spy balloon saga, as well as the Biden Administration’s lack of urgency — and transparency — on the matter.
