Quick
update — the toll of yesterday’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake
continues to climb, and Mercy Corps teams are rushing to meet critical
needs for families across Northwest Syria.
Search and rescue efforts continue amid winter weather conditions that
pose even greater threats for people who are sheltering outside and for
those who remain trapped under rubble.

Initial reports from our team and partners in Northwest Syria indicate
that the most significant needs will be shelter due to buildings that have
either collapsed or are no longer safe. In days to come, our response will
focus on getting urgently needed items such as hygiene kits and shelter
supplies to people whose homes were affected.

This is
urgent:
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria early Monday morning,
causing widespread damage and more than 3,000 deaths across the region.
This is a major humanitarian emergency — and it is devastating communities
already pushed to the brink due to extreme food shortages and violent
conflict.
Mercy Corps teams are responding right now in Northwest Syria — and we need
all the support our global community can offer. [ [link removed] ]Please send an urgent
gift to our Humanitarian Response
Fund to help people in moments of crisis like this one.
Mercy Corps’ Syria Country Director Kieren Barnes just sent this update:
"Our colleagues in Northwest Syria reported that the situation is
catastrophic, with the area affected by the earthquake being the center for
over 1.8 million displaced Syrians who were already suffering after a
decade of conflict in Syria. Already, 4.1 million people were going hungry
in Northwest Syria and food insecurity has worsened since the war in
Ukraine started."
Mercy Corps is rapidly assessing needs and providing emergency water,
sanitation, and hygiene support to people whose homes were affected by the
earthquake.
