Power the Vote is launching the Blue Texas
project to fight + fund everywhere!
Hey John
,
Don’t you love it when Republican shenanigans backfire?
When Texas Republicans passed their voter suppression law, Senate Bill 1, back in 2021 – they were warned that the law would create huge obstacles for voters.
And frankly, that was the idea all along. The bill was designed to make it harder to vote by mail.
And not for any good reason, either – Republicans thought that making it harder to vote by mail would hurt Democratic voters and give Republicans a leg up.
Initially, that proved to be right. During the March 2022 primary election, 25,000 voters had their vote-by-mail ballots rejected and not counted. That’s a rejection rate of 13%, up from just 1-2% in 2020.
And – it turned out – Democratic voters were more likely to have their ballots rejected than Republican voters.
But that’s not the end of the story.
Power the Vote funded voter protection staff in Texas, and those staff and their volunteers went to bat for these voters. They educated voters and helped them fix problems with their ballots. And they worked with elections offices to develop better practices to make sure every vote possible would be counted.
The result: during the May 2022 Primary Runoff election, the rejection rate fell – from 13% to just 3% statewide , almost in line with 2020 rejection rates.
The best part? In the March primary, Democratic primary ballots were more likely to be rejected. But the opposite was true in May – Republican ballots were rejected at a higher rate than Democratic ballots.
Republicans played voter suppression games, and they won voter suppression prizes.
You might think Republicans would learn – but nope, they’re still at it, proposing new voter suppression bills this legislative cycle.
So it’s up to us to hold Republicans accountable for their shenanigans.
That’s why Power the Vote is partnering to launch Blue Texas.
We’re a grassroots movement and community that’s focused on lifting up Texas voters in every corner of the state.
By funding state legislative nominees and voter protection, the Blue Texas community empowers voters to hold Texas Republicans accountable for their extreme policies – and ensures that no Republican legislative candidate gets a free ride.
