Home to beaches that provide haven to nesting sea turtles and North America's only coral reef, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is a national treasure -- and it's in trouble.

According to a 2011 government study, the sanctuary's habitats were in fair to poor condition, meaning that mangroves, coral gardens and seagrass weren't healthy enough for marine life to thrive.1

From climate change and agricultural runoff to abandoned ships and overuse, human activity has degraded some of the most crucial ecosystems within the sanctuary, endangering one of our country's most unique marine treasures.2

To address the poor conditions, NOAA is considering a plan to expand protected areas within the sanctuary, providing additional protections to critical habitat that allow manatees, sea turtles and fish to survive and thrive.3
