Biden Prepares for His State of the Union Speech While Vastly Unpopular
Axios: The stakes are high for Biden as he emphasizes a series of accomplishments and tries to control the narrative about his administration as it faces investigations by House Republicans. Now, a balloon from China has complicated that… Last year, Biden delivered his annual address to Congress six days after Russia invaded Ukraine, forcing his team to reorganize — and reimagine — the speech ( Axios). The country overwhelmingly (62 percent) thinks Biden has accomplished very little, his approval rating sits at 42.5 percent, and four in 10 Americans are worse off in Biden’s tenure ( National Review).

Former Top Twitter Employees to Testify Before House Oversight Committee Regarding Suppression of Tweets
Daily Wire: Three former Twitter executives who were ousted by Elon Musk upon his purchase of the company are expected to testify on Wednesday morning before the House Oversight Committee. Officials managing the social media platform built blacklists, prevented disfavored tweets from trending, and limited the visibility of entire accounts and trending topics without telling users. Lawmakers will question former Chief Legal Officer Vijaya Gadde, former Deputy General Counsel James Baker, and former Global Head of Trust and Safety Yoel Roth about their decisions to censor information that may have impacted the outcome of the 2020 election… More than 45% of Biden swing state voters said they were “unaware of the financial scandal enveloping Biden and his son, Hunter,” while awareness of the scandal would have led 9.4% of voters to choose another candidate ( Daily Wire).

Britain’s Government-Run Health Service Sees Largest Strike in History
Wall Street Journal: For more than a decade, the British government has run its National Health Service, the world’s largest government-run healthcare system, on a tight budget. The NHS prided itself on being one of the leanest healthcare systems in the developed world, spending less per head on average than its large European neighbors—and far less than the U.S. Now the state-funded service is falling apart. People who suffer heart attacks or strokes wait more than 1½ hours on average for an ambulance. Hospitals are so full they are turning patients away. A record 7.1 million people in England are stuck on waiting lists for nonemergency hospital treatment like hip replacements. The NHS on Monday faced the biggest strike in its history, with thousands of paramedics and nurses walking out over pay ( Wall Street Journal). Bloomberg: Some 100,000 nurses are striking alongside about 10,000 ambulance workers on Monday, with 4,200 physiotherapists walking out on Thursday. Nurses will take action again on Tuesday, and ambulance workers will do so on Friday. At least 55,000 appointments are likely to be delayed as a result of this week’s strikes ( Bloomberg).

Florida Files Bill Targeting Disney’s Self-Governance
Wall Street Journal: Walt Disney Co.’s dominion over its magic kingdom in Florida may be coming to an end. Republicans in Florida’s House of Representatives on Monday filed a bill that would dramatically alter the governance—and even change the name of—the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a special-tax district near Orlando that has allowed Disney to self-govern the land that houses its Walt Disney World Resort for more than 50 years. The move is the culmination of GOP efforts floated last year to rein in Disney’s special tax status, though it stops short of eliminating it outright. The bill would rename Reedy Creek as the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District and give Gov. Ron DeSantis the authority to appoint members to its governing body, the five-member board of supervisors ( Wall Street Journal). Daily Mail: Additionally, the bill would ensure Disney is held responsible for paying more than $700 million in unsecured debts and makes sure that doesn’t fall on Florida taxpayers ( Daily Mail).

Shocking Number of Millennials Still Rely on Parents to Pay Their Bills
New York Post: More than three in 10 (35%) adults admit they still have at least one bill on their parents’ tab. According to a new poll of 2,000 Americans, the top three expenses still paid by parents are rent (19%), groceries (19%) and utilities (16%). In fact, almost one-quarter (24%) of millennials polled say their parents cover their rent. About three-quarters of those respondents (72%) plan to take on these bills themselves within the next two years, but 30% admit they will be riding the wave until they’re told otherwise. Another 31% are trying to save money, saying it is cheaper to stay on their parent’s plan ( New York Post). Fox News: Polls also found that 63% of millennials and Gen Z have experienced feelings of burnout. In addition, many millennials reported not knowing how to accomplish certain tasks that were once expected of adults. Some of the reported tasks were conducting an oil change, changing a tire, tying a tie, jump-starting a car and sewing a hole. In an increasingly digital and specialized world, many of these “essential” tasks have become not as necessary to know ( Fox News).
