Friend, we wrote to you this morning when we first learned about the news of the back–to–back 7.8 and 7.7 magnitude earthquakes on the Turkish–Syrian border that have tragically killed more than 3,000 people. I have 3 important updates about the current situation I need to share with you:

1. More than 3,000 people have been killed. And initial reports from IRC staff on the ground in Syria indicate that the impact has been devastating in areas that already host a high number of displaced and vulnerable families.

2. A blizzard struck northern Syria over the weekend, leaving thousands now affected by the earthquake without shelter in freezing conditions. With shelters severely damaged and destroyed, many people don't know where they will sleep tonight as temperatures plummet below freezing. It's a race against the clock to provide lifesaving emergency support.

3. We have more than 1,000 staff inside Syria who work tirelessly to provide life–saving health care, protection and recovery support. We're urgently ramping up our emergency response — and funding is needed now to save lives and support essential services.

My colleagues in Syria and the surrounding region affected by the earthquake are working to respond to this crisis and provide assistance to those injured and in need.

You will be hearing from me and my colleagues in the coming weeks to inform you what we're seeing on the ground, and what assistance is needed.

In moments of crisis like these, I'm constantly inspired by supporters like you, Friend, who never fail to step up in an emergency. I am so grateful that you are on our team.

Friend, this is an awful and rapidly developing emergency. We're ramping up our efforts to raise emergency response funds now.

The IRC has been working in Syria since 2012. IRC teams are on the ground now and working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well–being of our staff, local partners and those affected and assessing the area as the situation develops.

The 7.8 magnitude quake struck in the early hours of Monday while people were asleep. Within 12 hours of the first earthquake, a second large earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 caused further devastation. Freezing temperatures have left thousands exposed to extreme cold and without shelter. Hundreds of people remain trapped under rubble. IRC rescue operations are already underway.

Can you rush an emergency gift right now to help families in Turkey and war–torn Syria and those around the world?

This is a desperate situation — especially for millions of Syrian refugees who live close to the epicenter. Turkey is the world's largest host of refugees, home to more than 3.6 million Syrian refugees who have fled their country during the last 12 years of war.

With your emergency gift, IRC teams can continue to rush supplies and aid to those who need it most — while continuing our critical programs around the world.

Thank you in advance for your immediate action and your compassion at this urgent hour of need. We will continue to keep you updated on our emergency response and what we are seeing on the ground.
