Do you have a second for a quick story?
“As a former public school teacher, Kat S. deeply values education. She was glad her local public school had a good reputation for quality. But even though her son made honor roll consistently, Kat suspected something was wrong. She never saw him writing, and she felt he wasn’t getting the help he needed at school for his ADHD.”
“When her son’s school closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, she learned just how bad things were. Assessments showed that her "honor roll student" was three years below grade level in math and could barely write more than a few sentences.”
Unfortunately, stories of parents like Kat aren’t unique. The COVID-19 pandemic gave parents a glimpse into their kids' daily lives at school and exposed the failings of a one-size-fits-all approach.
For many families, looking at their child’s curriculum over Zoom was all it took to want a change. For countless others, distance learning just didn’t work.
Thankfully, Kat was able to utilize Arizona’s Education Saving Accounts and move her son into a learning environment best suited for him.
The American Federation for Children believes every child and parent deserves access to these programs. And we’ve just successfully led an effort to pass Education Savings Accounts in Iowa!
