Hi John,
What an incredible first month it’s been serving Vermonters in Washington! From my committee work in Congress, to campaign stops back home, I wanted to share what I’ve been up to in the first month of 2023. Here’s a recap:
After being sworn in, signing my oath of office, and nominating our new Democratic Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, I began to receive leadership roles, committee assignments, an official ID card (pictured above – pretty cool!!), and work with my staff to set my legislative agenda for the 118th Congress (more coming on that soon). The photo above was taken by James Buck to accompany a Seven Days profile on my first days in Washington. If you haven’t already, you can read that piece here.
A highlight has also been being welcomed into the Congressional Progressive Caucus, where I will be serving as a Freshman Co-Chair while working alongside an incredible group of freshman members who share my progressive vision and values. Reps. Delia Ramirez, Maxwell Frost, and Robert Garcia – three of my new CPC colleagues and friends in the selfie above – will be some of my closest collaborators during my first term!
Finally, in one of my proudest moments of the month, I was appointed to the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Accountability under the leadership of Rep. Jaime Raskin. There, I am serving alongside strong progressive voices like Ro Khanna, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Katie Porter to defend our democracy, investigate bad actors, and make our government as transparent as possible. If you haven’t already, take a moment to watch me speak on MSNBC about my work on the Oversight Committee now.
Even with Month One in the books, calling myself your Congresswoman still feels surreal. Please know that every day that I step into this work, I feel the weight of my responsibility to our state and to our country, and I will never take the trust, support, or power that Vermonters have vested in me for granted.
Thank you for your continued support of my work in Washington. Onward to Month Two!
Yours,
Becca Balint
