Here are some updates from today.
In an unprecedented move on Friday evening, the Republican-led North Carolina Supreme Court, which flipped from 4-3 Democratic to 5-2 Republican in the 2022 midterm elections, agreed to rehear two cases already decided by the previous, Democratic-led court. One of the cases blocked a restrictive photo ID law and one tossed out North Carolina’s congressional and legislative maps for being partisan gerrymanders. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a statement of interest in a federal lawsuit in Pennsylvania challenging the state’s rules against counting undated and wrongly dated mail-in ballots. The DOJ sided with the plaintiffs, arguing that “[e]rrors or omissions regarding a date do not pertain to a voter’s qualifications” and ballots should not be rejected on that basis.
