We are in desperate need of more meaningful action to address our nation’s gun violence crisis. We’re only one month into 2023, and there have already been more than 39 mass shootings — a staggering and tragic loss of life. It doesn’t have to be like this, friend.
Democratic Attorney General Phil Weiser is leading the charge to expand on existing red flag laws in Colorado. The current law allows roommates, family members, and law enforcement to petition to have a firearm confiscated from somebody they think may be dangerous. Weiser wants to improve this lifesaving system by extending the ability to file a petition to district attorneys. With more eligible petitioners, there are increased opportunities for intervention to keep guns out of the hands of those who pose a significant risk to themselves or others.
We all deserve to live in a country where guns can’t be so easily acquired by people who pose an extreme risk of committing mass violence. Laws like the one AG Weiser is fighting to expand can help prevent firearms from ending up in the wrong hands and save our communities from further trauma.
When it comes to common sense gun control measures, Dem AGs are on the front lines working to protect the American people. Colorado’s going a step further by expanding on the laws already in place and adding an extra layer of security to keep dangerous weapons away from dangerous individuals.
Democratic AGs truly are “The People’s Lawyers” and DAGA is the only party committee devoted to electing more of them. Since 2016, we’ve won two-thirds of our targeted races, and we can't stop now – will you chip in today?
