Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams have been working since the early hours of this morning to treat survivors of two devastating earthquakes that have struck southeast Turkey and northwest Syria.
The first earthquake struck overnight and measured magnitude 7.8—one of the most powerful quakes in the region in at least a century. It was felt as far away as Lebanon and Israel. Preliminary data registered the second earthquake at magnitude 7.5. Since then, more than 50 aftershocks have been recorded, and the number keeps rising.
As of right now, local authorities report that 2,300 people have been killed and more than 9,000 have been injured—and those numbers are, sadly, going up as local authorities continue their search for survivors.
Because MSF was already supporting hospitals in northern Syria, our medical teams were able to begin a response immediately following the earthquakes:
In the northern Syrian city of Idlib, we are treating patients in hospitals, and our teams have donated emergency medical kits to other facilities in the region.
In other locations, we have donated supply kits and are in touch with health authorities to provide support.
We remain in close contact with authorities in northwest Syria and southern Turkey to provide support based on their needs and care for people affected by the earthquake.
This email was sent from the U.S. section of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), an international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, and exclusion from health care.
