Early this morning a catastrophic 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Syria, Turkey and surrounding countries, followed by waves of forceful aftershocks.

The impact of the early morning earthquakes are devastating: early reports indicate hundreds of people feared dead or injured in Syria alone. As rescue efforts continue, casualties are expected to rise. Already experiencing harsh winter weather, a cholera outbreak and an ongoing humanitarian crisis, Syrians are in dire need of immediate assistance.

At the moment, UNICEF is coordinating with the Government of Turkey on the emerging needs linked to the wider humanitarian response. But UNICEF has been on the ground working in Syria since 1970 and has since expanded its response when civil war broke out in 2011. In response to the earthquake, UNICEF is centering emergency relief for children and families with the highest need. There is also a heightened focus on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), where field teams are assessing critical damage on main water stations to determine the extent of destruction and interruption in services, and providing emergency water access for displaced families.

Every second counts in emergency response and recovery.

The complex crises in Syria are only exacerbated by today’s events. Prior to the earthquake and aftershocks, UNICEF requested a considerable humanitarian appeal to provide resources and aid to a country already steeped in conflict — nearly 6.5 million children are in need.

Now, this new emergency has doubled down the need for immediate relief in the country.

Children in Syria cannot afford to experience more harm. We must take action now.
