This year’s Black History Month unfortunately begins after another young
Black man was brutally killed at the hands of the police. Tyre Nichols’
family and the entire Memphis community deserve a full, transparent
investigation and severe consequences for the perpetrators.

It’s important to meet this moment with more than just words. I’ll keep
using what power I have in Congress to push forward policies that not only
reform police departments, but uplift Black communities.

I joined the 100 Black Men chapter of Orange County on Martin Luther King
Day to help package food for families in need. Alongside other Orange
County volunteers, they boxed food for nearly 10,000 community members.

Chapters of 100 Black Men of America deliver unique programs that address
specific needs in local communities. Their goal is to show mentees their
potential by stressing the importance of education and providing them the
tools they need to be leaders—whether that’s a college scholarship or
access to healthcare. Mentees also do meaningful volunteer work,
supporting families and whole communities.
