While Minnesota shows us the opportunity that exists in the states to push for a clean energy future, Texas also shows us the challenges of relying on red states to get with the program. That’s why we have to keep the pressure on legislators in gas-favoring states like Texas to make sure we can keep up the national transition toward carbon-free electricity.
John:
Good news and bad news.
Good news: At the end of last month, Minnesota Democrats moved to set a new standard and shift their utilities toward a cleaner energy future. Their standard is to reach 100% carbon-free electricity by 2040.
This isn’t the first time a standard like this has been proposed in Minnesota. But this time it is actually expected to become law, because pro-climate Democrats reclaimed both houses of the Minnesota legislature and hold the governorship.
Minnesota would also set a new gold standard for the clean energy transition, by setting an even more aggressive timeline than those of climate-champion states like California or New York.
John, this is what happens when we elect pro-climate Democrats. Our ambition only increases.
Bad news: On the flip side, despite clean energy’s rise on the Texas power grid, regulators and officials like Lt. Governor Dan Patrick are still looking to throw a lifeline to natural gas companies at the expense of solar and wind — and we know Texas’ Republican congressmen are poised to vote against clean energy standards in Washington, too.
