January 21, 2023 marked the 13th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United v. FEC decision, which gave corporations the free speech rights of individuals and opened the door to unlimited corporate spending to influence elections.
Now: election spending has exploded; the ultra wealthy hold enormously outsized power, transforming our democracy into more and more of an oligarchy each day; Super PACs have brazenly ignored campaign finance laws, and corporations are hiding their political spending–and even bribe politicians–in secretive entities; and foreign powers have exploited the loopholes Citizens United created to influence our elections from abroad.
This is NOT democracy, and this CANNOT be allowed to continue.
