Leadership

In this week’s Leadership newsletter, we honor Black history month by looking at what it means to be pro-Black and how, as history has shown time and again, centering Blackness benefits not just Black folks, but all folks. First, NPQ’s Cyndi Suarez digs deep into what it means to be pro-Black through a series of conversations about what the characteristics of a pro-Black organization are and what a pro-Black sector might sound, look, taste, and feel like. Next, we move from defining pro-Blackness to what it looks like in practice when applied at an organizational level. Then, we look at just how centering Blackness can improve everyone’s well-being. Finally, NPQ is still hiring for several positions: copyeditor, fundraiser manager, and senior editors. Apply before it’s too late for the chance to join the NPQ team!

Defining Pro-Black

What It Looks Like to Build a Pro-Black Organization

“The presiding concentration on confronting anti-Blackness often requires that Black staff define, defend, and solve their own experiences of oppression within organizations. Using pro-Black power as a frame draws in white staff and staff of color to interrogate their own anti-Black bias, as well as drawing the organization into challenging the systems, processes, policies, and practices, not just interpersonal behaviors or attitudes.” Read more…

When Blackness Is Centered, Everybody Wins: A Conversation with Cyndi Suarez and Dax-Devlon Ross

“Let’s just name and center this right here as pro-Black. It’s not just a place where Black folks can thrive and be. It’s a place where all folks can thrive and be. Because in my understanding, and how I have referenced and thought about history, whenever Blackness is centered, everybody wins.” Read more…
