Congressional Republicans are holding the U.S. debt ceiling hostage in order to get their desired budget cuts - but they don’t even have an inkling of a plan . They’re messing with a political hand grenade.
Let’s acknowledge the reality of this situation. After years of big spending under the Trump Presidency, now House Republicans are demanding big spending cuts. But they can’t even agree on what funding they’re willing to cut.
The truth is, Republicans have absolutely no place messing around with the debt ceiling. If they force us into default on our debt, it would be devastating for our economy. We could see higher interest rates and increased payments for student debt and home mortgages. Experts say it could even spark an economic recession.
In the Senate, I’m doing everything in my power to prevent our government from defaulting on our debt. But right now, I’m asking you to stand with me and tell the House GOP to quit playing this dangerous game with our economy.

Republicans putting the full faith and credit of the United States in jeopardy is just plain crazy. We’re finally starting to bring down inflation, and just this past week we got news that the economy is stronger than it’s been at any point since the COVID lockdowns. Now we’re facing a GOP-manufactured crisis that puts all that at risk. And if that wasn’t bad enough, a default would throw a wrench in key parts of the federal government – from military salaries to Social Security checks.
