Together, we turned NYC’s speed cams on 24/7, and saved lives. But we have more work to do

Dear Friend,

Six months ago, my bill to keep New York City’s speed cameras on 24/7 was signed into law by the Governor. In just the last six months, we’ve seen overall traffic fatalities fall 6.6%. Additionally, we’ve seen a 25% reduction in violations, while still holding reckless drivers accountable.

My law  was an important step towards making our streets safer, but we have a lot of work left to do if we’re going to achieve Vision Zero.

That’s why last week I rallied together with several of my colleagues alongside members of the NYS Safe Streets coalition to call for the passage of the SAFE Streets Act

The SAFE Streets Act is a package of essential, life-saving measures that will make our streets safer for everyone. The bills included in the package will:

  • Allow the city of New York to control its own speed limits without having to go through Albany.
  • Create complete streets with new safety element projects funded at the state and federal level.
  • Establish a safe-vehicle mandate that requires intelligent speed assistance and other safety-oriented features in new cars.
  • Support crash victims and their loved ones by guaranteeing basic legal rights to those directly affected by reckless driving.
  • Protect vulnerable people on the road by mandating that drivers pass bikers at a safe distance of at least three feet.

We have the means to drastically reduce — if not altogether eliminate — death and injury caused by unsafe, poorly-regulated driving in New York City starting this year. There is no justifiable reason to stand by and watch as record numbers of pedestrians and bikers are needlessly struck by careless drivers.

Together, we worked hard to turn speed cams on 24/7. Now, we must focus on passing the SAFE Streets Act as soon as possible. It won’t be easy, but I know we can do it: together.

Fighting to make our streets SAFE,

Andrew
