John, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the surge of mass shootings that our country has experienced in the early weeks of 2023.

I'm the product of gun violence. I lost my biological father to gun violence at the age of two. As one of the millions of Americans who's been impacted by this public health crisis, I am angry that our country has failed to collectively act and prevent needless, senseless death.

The recent shootings we've seen are a painful reminder that there is far more we must do at the legislative level to confront our epidemic of gun violence, and they underscore the importance of having fearless voices against the gun lobby in elected office.

It doesn't help that "norms" like the Senate filibuster have blocked commonsense national legislation. It doesn't help that our campaign finance system lets the gun lobby spend relentlessly to protect its agenda. It doesn't help that the Supreme Court last year rolled back the ability of states to regulate guns.

But John, there are still major ways for our state legislatures to have an impact. That's why I'm seeking to return to Richmond. When I was in the House of Delegates, I helped pass landmark gun safety legislation, which included expanding background checks for all gun sales. In the State Senate, I'll push for even bolder action — such as an assault weapons ban.

Now is the time for our leaders to buckle down and continue the work of protecting our communities from gun violence. With your help, I hope to join them next January and lend my voice once again to this work.

If you believe in our cause and believe that a safer Commonwealth is possible, please support my campaign with a grassroots contribution today.
