John,
Student loan debt has continued to be a growing crisis in the United States, hurting millions of individuals and their families. The staggering amount of debt that grows by the day is putting a strain on borrowers and keeps them from getting ahead.
A huge reason why this has become such a large issue is that one clause in the 1998 Higher Education Act that effectively eliminates the ability to discharge student loan debt. That’s left borrowers with no real solutions to their financial struggles, and this has resulted in unmet payments, garnished wages and even reduced social security benefits.
This is where the bipartisan FRESH START Through Bankruptcy Act, sponsored by Democratic Sen. Richard J. Durbin and Republican Sen. John Cornyn, comes into play.
This act would fix the restrictions and let education debt be treated just like every other debt and allow the protections and support of bankruptcy, providing struggling borrowers with a fresh start and much-needed relief.
Millions of Americans are struggling and Congress has the power to do something about it. Demand that Congress allow student loan debt to be discharged through bankruptcy.
The COVID-19 pandemic and high inflation from corporate greed has further exacerbated the problem, with millions still struggling to make ends meet. The current system is failing those who are in dire need of help, and it's time for a change.
Treating student debt like other forms of consumer debt would give people the chance to restart their lives and provide them with a path to financial stability.
This would not only have a critical impact on the student loan debt crisis, it's also an opportunity to right a wrong that should have never existed in the first place.
It’s not often that Republicans support common sense solutions to issues addressing the soaring costs of higher education, so that makes it even more important for us to get Congress to correct this past mistake while we have the bipartisan support to do it.
Demand that Congress allow student loan debt to be discharged through bankruptcy now.
Thank you for standing with us to bring change to millions of Americans who are struggling to repay their student loan debt.
