Team, we have good news and bad news about our fight to end gerrymandering and secure fair maps across the country.
First, the good news: Thanks to our work, our maps are the fairest they’ve been in decades. Ahead of the 2022 elections, The New York Times called the House maps the fairest in 40 years. As a result, Democrats were able to win tough races in key states and block the predicted “red wave.”
Now, the bad news: Across the country, too many maps are still gerrymandered. In states like Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Texas, manipulated maps helped Republicans pick up extra House seats. Considering that the GOP only won the House majority by five votes, those gerrymandered districts had a huge impact.
But there’s more good news, team: The NDRC is CONTINUING our fight to end gerrymandering – and it’s not too late to get involved!
While we’ve made incredible progress, we’re reminded of what A.G. Eric Holder said: “Now is not the time to take our democracy for granted.” He’s right – and that’s why we must keep fighting.
Right now the NDRC is continuing our efforts to mobilize communities so we can replace gerrymandered maps with fair districts and hand power back to voters.
