Gottheimer gets Intelligence Committee seat
Congressman is only N.J. House member to serve on select committee
Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff) announced today that he has been appointed by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to a seat on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, which oversees U.S. intelligence agencies.
“I’m honored to be appointed by Leader Hakeem Jeffries to serve on the bipartisan House Intelligence Committee and to have the opportunity to work with our intelligence community to protect our great nation,” Gottheimer said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle on the Select Committee to find common ground, support our intelligence community, fight terror, and advance national security solutions to protect us all.”
Gottheimer will also continue to serve on the House Financial Services Committee, where he’s held a seat since first arriving in Congress. He’ll be the only New Jerseyan to serve on either Financial Services or Intelligence in the 118th Congress.
Two Democrats who previously sat on Intelligence, former Chairman Adam Schiff (D-California) and Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-California), were both booted from the committee by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who said that the congressmen “severely undermined [the committee’s] primary national security and oversight missions – ultimately leaving our nation less safe.”
The committee now has a new chairman, Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio), as well as a new Democratic leader, Rep. Jim Himes (D-Connecticut)
