[ [link removed] ]Brave grandmother Máxima Acuña on her family farm in Peru.

John,

Brave grandmother Máxima Acuña has been beaten, hospitalized, and bullied
in court by the biggest gold mining company in the world.

Our community has come together to help her before…and now she needs our
help again.

For more than a decade, Newmont Mining has had its sights set on Máxima’s
family farm in Peru. Newmont tried everything to turn the land into a
massive new gold and copper mine, but Máxima refused to give up her
home…and has paid a brutal price.

After years of lawsuits, Máxima’s legal fund has dried up. A decision on
her case will come any day, but it won't be the end of the road. If she
wins, Newmont will try to bankrupt her with an appeal. And if the mining
Goliath wins, Máxima will have to appeal herself or lose her land. Without
more cash, it's a losing battle. Can you chip in to help this brave
grandmother win her case once and for all?

Newmont needs the Máxima’s family farmland to build the largest open-pit
mine in Latin America. Its plans include draining nearby lakes and turning
them into waste storage pits that could poison the nearby communities.

But when Newmont tried to force Máxima off her land, she refused. Mine
security personnel threatened and beat her. They destroyed part of her
home and filed lawsuit after lawsuit to drown her in legal bills.

Against all odds, Máxima was able to fend off the gold mine alongside the
tireless work of grassroots organizations in Peru and millions of SumOfUs
members like you. But Newmont isn’t stopping its lawsuit or harassment. It
knows that winning this case will send a clear message to others who try
to stand up to their bullying – do so at your own peril.

Over and over again, our community chipped in to support Máxima, and now
her case is finally nearing its end. Her amazing lawyers working on a
shoestring budget expect a ruling in early 2023. If she loses, she needs
to be ready to appeal right away, or she could be thrown off her land. If
she wins, she’ll almost certainly face new threats from Newmont.

Let’s help Máxima take her case over the finish line and campaign to stop
corporate bullies everywhere from using abuse and harassment to get what
they want:

This isn't an isolated incident. With operations on five continents,
Newmont has been accused of polluting the environment, damaging natural
habitats, impacting the health of local communities, corruption, and
bribery in locations around the world from Nevada to Indonesia.

These unethical business practices can't continue. The Supreme Court of
Peru already acquitted Máxima after Newmont tried to accuse her of
illegally occupying her own land, but the mining giant knows that losing
means its gold and copper mine is effectively dead – and won't rest until
it's crushed Máxima for good.

Our community has supported Máxima for years, and now it could all come
down to this. Will you help this grandmother take down a mining Goliath?

It’s been a long battle, but SumOfUs has supported Máxima every step of
the way. We showed up at Newmont AGMs to call out the company face to
face, helped her win the Goldman Environmental Prize to shine a light on
what is happening, and delivered a petition signed by 140,000 of us
calling on Newmont to leave Máxima alone. When she heard, she said, “I
thank you because your support has given me the strength to continue
fighting."

Let’s come together to help give her the strength to finish this fight.

Thanks for all that you do,
Angus and the SumOfUs team
