Dear NRDC Activist,
The Biden Administration appears ready to approve a massive new oil drilling project in Alaska's Western Arctic that would generate an astounding 277 million metric tons of climate-busting carbon pollution but will be a financial boon for Big Oil.
The "Willow Project" would be a huge setback in our transition to a clean energy future, and flies in the face of President Biden's commitment to tackle our climate crisis.
Help us fight back by sending an urgent letter to President Biden and Interior Secretary Deb Haaland. Tell the administration to REJECT the Willow Project and any other reckless drilling that would jeopardize our climate future!
The Willow Project is the largest oil drilling project proposed on public lands. Not only is it a climate bomb, but it also will devastate local wildlife like polar bears, caribou, and migratory birds.
But even with these threats to our climate, our environment, and critical Arctic wildlife, President Biden's Bureau of Land Management (BLM) just released its final environmental impact statement that identified a preferred alternative that would allow the Willow Project to move forward.
There's still time to act: the administration cannot approve the development plan for Willow until 30 days after the environmental impact statement was issued. So we must rally overwhelming public opposition to Big Oil's Willow Project now. The President's climate legacy is at stake.
Send a message to President Biden and the Secretary of Interior demanding that they reject the Willow oil drilling project.
The Willow Project is being led by oil industry giant ConocoPhillips, which like other global oil companies, is flush with record profits from high energy prices. In fact, ConocoPhillips and some of the other largest oil companies reported annual profits of over $150 billion in 2022. They don't need any more money.
But Big Oil's hunger for profits is insatiable — the Willow Project will generate hundreds of millions of barrels of destructive crude oil. And with that oil comes more climate pollution and more dependence on dirty fossil fuels at a time when we need to be speeding up our transition to clean energy.
President Biden has been a climate champion. His push for the groundbreaking Inflation Reduction Act, signed into law last year, will result in billions of dollars in investments in new clean energy and infrastructure projects critical to tackling climate change.
President Biden must not fail to meet the moment when it comes to the critical step of winding down fossil fuel production. Along with the Willow Project, the Biden Administration is considering massive new offshore drilling projects in the Gulf of Mexico, and new oil and gas drilling in other western states.
NRDC, backed by our millions of supporters like you, will do what it takes to stop the Willow Project dead in its tracks, including taking the Biden administration to court, if necessary. And right now, we need your voice urging the administration to reject the Willow Project once and for all.
Help us build a groundswell of opposition by telling President Biden and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) not to grant permits for the Willow Project.
President Biden's climate legacy is threatened so long as he continues to fail to tackle the root of the problem — unrestrained extraction of fossil fuels.
He must act, and we must pressure him to do so. Please take action to stop the Willow Project.
Sincerely,
Ann Alexander
