There is only one reason that legislation for survivor justice has been put on halt: to weaken the voices of young, immigrant, Black, Indigenous, and other people of color. The Republicans in Harrisburg have decided to hold justice hostage in exchange for more injustice.

As they appear poised to continue “holding the line” against basic decency indefinitely, it’s time we get into just how disastrous their voter ID amendment would be for the Commonwealth’s voting rights.

The freedom to vote should not be limited by the color of one's skin, age, or how much money one makes. Will you pitch in $10 today to help us empower our communities and show the GOP that our voices will be heard?

Voting in the Commonwealth is already excessively difficult for those who work long hours, have limited access to transportation, or can’t take time off — to name just a few accessibility issues.

The fact that Republicans want to make voting even more difficult by requiring this particular obstacle is no coincidence: According to the ACLU, up to 25% of voting-age African-Americans lack government-issued I.D., while only 8% of voting-age white Americans have the same issue.

As a voting rights organization, the New Pennsylvania Project stands firmly against any restrictive voter ID laws as we know they would directly affect the communities we center in our work. Our mission is to expand the electorate to reflect the growing diversity of the Commonwealth, centering the very communities that have been historically disenfranchised and often ignored from the democratic process. This proposed Constitutional amendment would stand directly against that goal.

Black, Indigenous, and other people of color have fought for centuries for the freedom to vote, and we refuse to take any steps backward.
