The stage for the next Congressional climate battle is set — and it’s going to be this year’s Farm Bill. And our biggest fight ahead will be to defend conservation programs in the final bill at all costs.

There’s a lot at stake here, John. These conservation programs cover a wide range of issues affecting our farmers, including soil health, food waste, electrification, climate resilience, and more. And Farm Bill reauthorizations only happen once every five years. That means we have one shot at getting pro-climate policy included until 2028.

But House Republicans are already threatening to cut these conservation programs, despite these programs being wildly popular with farmers in their districts. SEEC members will keep the pressure on to ensure these pro-climate policies are included in the next Farm Bill, but they need you behind them to get it done. Estimates show that agriculture produced 11% of US greenhouse gas emissions in 2020. If we get these recommendations included into the final Farm Bill, we not only have a real chance to provide much-needed support to farmers on the frontlines of climate change but also to tackle one of the biggest sources of pollution.

That’s why SEEC’s Climate and Agriculture Task Force — led by Reps. Chellie Pingree (Maine) and Kim Schrier (Washington) — is focused on ensuring this Farm Bill provides farmers with the resources they need to address the climate crisis.
