Gov. Justice says January revenue surplus proves opportunity for tax cuts is now
|
|
Gov. Justice earlier this week announced that West Virginia’s General Revenue collections for January 2023 are $162.2 million above estimates and 8.5% ahead of prior year receipts. Year-to-date record collections are $995 million above estimate.
"Without any question in the world, our continued revenue surpluses prove that we can very safely and conservatively move forward with a 50% tax cut in the state of West Virginia, especially if we do it wisely, and we do it over three years and phase it in,” Gov. Justice said. “So this is our opportunity to do something for hard-working West Virginians and put money back in their pockets.”

Gov. Justice takes Tax Cut Town Halls to Bridgeport and Martinsburg
|
|
Gov. Justice made two more stops on his latest tour of West Virginia, hosting Tax Cut Towns Halls at the Bridgeport Conference Center and the Old Historic Courthouse in Martinsburg to discuss his proposal, eliminating 50% of the personal income tax.
ABOUT THE GOVERNOR’S PROPOSED TAX CUT
The Governor’s proposal includes a 50% personal income tax reduction over three years while setting aside $700 million to establish a Personal Income Tax Reserve Fund that almost equals our current Rainy Day Fund. This insurance policy protects against any shortfalls as we go forward.
The phase-out begins with a 30% reduction in 2023, and another 10% reduction in the following two years.

Gov. Justice and WorkForce West Virginia announce short-time compensation program as an alternative to layoffs
|
|
Gov. Justice earlier this week announced that employers facing a reduction in business activity can now apply for the Short-Time Compensation (STC) Program through WorkForce West Virginia. This new program provides an alternative to layoffs for employers experiencing a decrease in available work.
The STC allows employers to reduce work hours instead of laying off some employees while others continue to work full-time. Eligible employees with reduced hours may collect a percentage of their unemployment compensation (UC) benefits to replace a portion of their lost wages.

The 2023 Almost Heaven Governor’s Art Exhibition winners announced
|
|
Gov. Justice, along with the West Virginia Department of Tourism and the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History (WVDACH), announced the winners of the fifth annual Almost Heaven Governor’s Art Exhibition.
Designed to showcase student creativity and the arts, this year’s exhibition called for one-of-a-kind postcard designs illustrating a favorite West Virginia park (state, city or county). Selected postcard artwork will be used by the Department of Tourism to personally invite travelers to Almost Heaven.

Gov. Justice appoints Thomas Hoxie, Charles Richard Wilson to Judicial Court seats
|
|
Gov. Jim Justice earlier this week announced that he has appointed Charles Richard Wilson to the 2nd Judicial Circuit Court which serves Marshall, Tyler, and Wetzel counties.
Wilson is a lifelong resident of Marshall County, who’s practiced law in public and private practice for over 30 years. He graduated from the West Virginia University College of Law and has served as an assistant prosecutor for Marshall County, and as a fiduciary commissioner and mental hygiene commissioner.

Gov. Justice announced a second Judicial Court appointment with Thomas Hoxie to the 19th Judicial Circuit Court which serves Barbour and Taylor counties.
Hoxie is a lifelong resident of Barbour County and is a graduate of the West Virginia University College of Law. He worked as a civil attorney primarily in Barbour and Taylor Counties before being elected as Barbour County Prosecuting Attorney in 2016.

Gov. Justice announces appointments to Dept. of Administration positions
|
|
Gov. Justice earlier this week announced the appointment of John Mchugh as Director of the General Services Division (GSD) and Arlie Hubbard as Executive Director of the Real Estate Division, both under the Department of Administration.
McHugh is the current Real Estate Division Director. Hubbard is the current Real Estate Division Deputy Director. Both appointments are effective Feb. 25, 2023.
