Weekend Reading
Dear John,
We’re excited to announce the launch of AFSC’s new website! Over the past year, our staff have been working hard to improve how the site serves our global AFSC community. That includes improving accessibility for people of all abilities, highlighting stories of how our efforts are making a difference, and making it easier for you to find the resources you need. We hope you enjoy exploring the new afsc.org! [link removed]
Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:
Last chance to sign our petition: Tell Congress to cut Pentagon spending and keep social programs: [link removed] As elected officials consider federal spending cuts, it’s important that they hear us from today. Join AFSC, Win Without War, Daily Kos, and other partners to tell Congress to prioritize the needs of the people—not more weapons and war.
Yes, policing is still deadly: [link removed] Tyre Nichols was one of at least 79 people killed by police in the first month of this year. These killings are stark reminders of why we cannot forget the lessons of 2020, writes AFSC's Mary Zerkel. And today, we must recommit to creating community safety for all beyond policing.
Today at 1 p.m.: Black Quaker Lives Matter Film Festival kicks off: [link removed] Join AFSC for the start of this special online series of events to celebrate Quakers of color. Today we’ll screen the film “Interview with Bill Sutherland,” a nonviolence advocate and AFSC staff member who supported the struggle for African liberation. Stay tuned after the film for a discussion with AFSC’s Joyce Ajlouny and Keith Harvey and Dr. Matthew Meyer, who co-authored a book with Bill Sutherland.
Do you know a young activist looking to hone their skills in leadership?: AFSC is now accepting applications for the 2023 cohort of our Emerging Leaders for Liberation [link removed] program to develop young organizers. Applicants must be 18 to 22 years old and affiliated with an AFSC program, a Quaker college, or a Quaker meeting. If you or someone you know is interested, check out our application. [link removed] To learn more, register for our information session [link removed] on Feb. 8 (8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT).
California police have spent millions buying guns from vendors with firearms violations: [link removed] That’s according to a new analysis from the nonprofit Brady: United Against Gun Violence. The findings came after Brady reviewed six years of law enforcement purchasing records. Those records were obtained through numerous public record requests made by AFSC as part of our work to expose police militarization. (The Intercept) [link removed]
