Rep. Xiong

Greetings Eastsiders,?????

?

We are one month into the session, and lots of great things are happening.

Drivers Licenses for All

On Monday, I voted to pass HF 4 [ [link removed] ], which is also known as ?Driver?s Licenses for All.? This?bill would allow Minnesota residents to obtain a driver?s license, regardless of documentation status. After passing standard licensing exams and tests, families will be able to complete essential daily tasks like driving to work, dropping kids off at school, or attending medical appointments. This measure would impact 81,000 of our immigrant neighbors and has broad support from law enforcement, the business community, and unions, who have all testified in support. ?

Restore the Vote Act

Thursday night, the Minnesota House voted to pass the Restore the Vote Act. The bill would restore voting rights to?individuals convicted of a felony upon completion of incarceration. Twenty-one other states, including our neighbor North Dakota, already restore voting rights upon release. I was proud to cast my vote in support of it alongside my DFL colleagues and two members from the other side of the aisle.?

Juneteenth

This week, we also voted to establish Juneteenth as a state holiday. Yesterday, the Governor signed it into law. I am glad we were able to move this bill forward as we begin Black History Month. We have just begun the work we are committed to doing to rectify racial disparities in Minnesota.?

Free School Lunch

I have heard from several of you this week about our Free School Lunch proposal. I want to give you an update. ?

I am still working alongside Rep. Jordan, the bill author, and several other colleagues to provide continued free breakfast and lunch to all public school students in Minnesota. This program provided relief to struggling families during the pandemic and can help them well into the future. ?

The bill has passed its final committee hearing and has been placed on the general register to be heard on the House Floor. I will update you when we know more about when it will head to the Floor for a vote.?

Gun Safety Bills

Yesterday, the Public Safety Finance and Policy committee heard four bills [ [link removed] ]?related to gun safety. I am thankful for everyone who came out to testify and share their stories, opinions, and experiences. Gun violence has no place in Minnesota, and I?m thankful that we finally have an opportunity to address the issue and start working towards reducing gun violence in our communities. You can watch a video of the hearing on the House Info YouTube page. [ [link removed] ] ?

UI For School Employees

This week, we passed HF 20 out of the Workforce Development Committee. This bill would modify and expand unemployment insurance benefits for some public school employees. This is a big step in making sure that the folks who take care of and educate our kids every day have safety and security.?I want to thank my colleague Rep. Greenman for spearheading this important bill. ?
