Victory! School Choice Support Signaled by Texas State Board of Education

This week, the Texas State Board of Education decided to unite with our state leaders and state legislature by giving school choice a better chance at success in the 88th Legislative Session. The SBOE voted 8-5 to delete their legislative priority to oppose any efforts that support giving kids and parents more options by having the money follow the child. You may recall that the SBOE voted on this anti-school choice legislative priority in November and it overwhelmingly passed by a large margin. But thanks to your emails and phone calls to the SBOE, their stance completely flipped and they will no longer oppose school choice bills at the Texas legislature. Some of the change in the votes and new direction toward supporting more option for parents is because there are new board members on the SBOE, likely because people like you showed up at the ballot box.

And despite pressure from a small minority to repeal their stance of regaining authority over textbooks and instructional materials, the SBOE left their legislative priority to return textbook selection back to the statewide elected SBOE untouched!

The Texas Values team was present to counsel and provide testimony to the SBOE. Our team advised the board to delete their legislative priority against school choice. Our team will continue to fight at the Texas legislature for strong legislation that supports school choice and better education options for parents and students.
