On Wednesday, I was honored to be named as Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), a new committee formed for the specific purpose of investigating and developing policy to address the U.S.’s technological, economic, and security engagement with the CCP. Since I took office, the economic wellbeing and national security of our nation have been my foremost concerns, and it is undeniable that the CCP poses serious economic and security threats not only to the United States, but also to democracy and freedom across the globe. The CCP has repeatedly illustrated its intentions and capabilities through its threats against Taiwan’s democracy, its use of TikTok, and its theft of hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of American intellectual property. My time on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, as well as serving as Chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, have only reinforced my grave concerns about the dangers the CCP poses to our nation, and I look forward to the work ahead in helping lead the Select Committee to protect our country from these threats.
This Select Committee is being established at a time when anti-Asian hate and violence are on the rise across our nation. It’s essential that this committee focuses its vital work on protecting all Americans from the threat posed by the CCP, while avoiding any rhetoric that fuels the types of xenophobia that have endangered members of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. I’m extremely conscious of those concerns, especially as the first South Asian American to ever lead a Congressional committee as a Ranking Member or Chair. As Ranking Member, I will work with members from both parties on our committee to maintain a singular focus on our mission of readying the United States for all the challenges posed by the Chinese Communist Party.
