Ella Baker, a Virginia native and one of the pioneers of the Civil Rights movement, once said, “Give light and people will find the way.”
As our country continues to undergo a reckoning with both its past and present, Black History Month is a time to look back at the impact of Black Americans on our democracy and our culture. By shining a brighter light on the past, we can forge a better path forward.
Our Commonwealth has a long and painful history around slavery and racial violence. Therefore, this month is both a time of solemn reflection and celebration of Black achievement. I encourage all Virginians to consider taking one or more of the following actions this month:
