Ella Baker, a Virginia native and one of the pioneers of the Civil Rights movement, once said, “Give light and people will find the way.”

As our country continues to undergo a reckoning with both its past and present, Black History Month is a time to look back at the impact of Black Americans on our democracy and our culture. By shining a brighter light on the past, we can forge a better path forward.

Our Commonwealth has a long and painful history around slavery and racial violence. Therefore, this month is both a time of solemn reflection and celebration of Black achievement. I encourage all Virginians to consider taking one or more of the following actions this month:

• Call your elected officials and demand progress on criminal justice reform and voting rights
• Support Black-owned businesses in your community
• Look into Black History Month events, exhibits, and programs that will educate and begin valuable discussions
• Sign up for the NAACP to learn about further events and ways to get involved
• Start a conversation with a friend or family member about how you can take active steps to promote anti-racism in your community
• Explore the history, arts, and contributions of Black Americans in your local community.

Let us keep the wise words of Ella Baker in mind as we navigate this month – and all the months ahead.
