Today, the newly radicalized State Board of Education (SBOE) betrayed millions of public school students by voting to remove opposition to private school vouchers from their legislative recommendations for this year.
Voucher schemes divert our tax dollars from our neighborhood public schools to subsidize tuition for wealthy families who want to send their kids to unregulated private and religious schools, and this vote is a reversal of the SBOE’s November vote recommending lawmakers oppose vouchers during the 88th Legislative Session.
The difference between now and November? Four new far-right members have joined the board—including one who has rejected public schools for her own children.
Now, our fight against vouchers moves to the Capitol, and we already know that far-right lawmakers will continue their crusade for control by focusing on bills that support vouchers this legislative session. We have upcoming opportunities for you to join that fight:
Tomorrow, Saturday, we’ll be hosting Texas Legislature 101 for TFN Advocates at 10 AM CST, where you’ll learn more about how the Texas Legislature works and the role that you can play in making a difference during this session.
