Do you think Congress should address the gun violence epidemic?

John:

In the span of about two weeks, we saw six mass shootings in California alone – and since the year began, we’ve seen more than 50 nationwide. 2022 was one of the deadliest years for gun violence on record, and 2023 is shaping up to be even worse.

The United States is the only country of its kind where these tragedies regularly happen. That means it is within the power and the duty of our elected officials to address this crisis with urgency and real solutions. If they refuse to do their duty, we must use our power as a community to replace them with leaders who will.

One of those leaders is Emerge alum Rep. Lucy McBath, who was instrumental in seeing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act – the first major national legislative action on gun violence prevention in almost 30 years – signed into law. The bill even included Rep. McBath's red flag laws, which help to de-escalate emergency situations and have been proven to save lives. Rep. McBath is a survivor herself, having lost her son to gun violence. She ran for Congress so she could turn her gun violence prevention activism into legislation and she has done exactly that.

John, data shows that women are more likely than men to support stricter gun violence prevention laws, and women of color are confronting this issue head-on. That's why Emerge is committed to training and elevating Democratic women of color who will treat this crisis with the urgent action it deserves and prioritize the lives and safety of each and every member of our communities.

But we need to know that you’re with us. That’s why we’re asking 147 more Emerge community members – including you, John – to submit their responses now. Please tell us:

Thank you for speaking up today as we work toward real solutions.

– Team Emerge

Emerge is a national organization working to recruit, train, and get Democratic women elected across the country, and we are so grateful to have you on our team. Our alums are strong voices for Democratic values — and they are running up and down the ballot to fight for working families. They are fighting for critical issues that affect our communities, such as the environment, accessible and affordable health care, social justice, and education equity. We need more alums fighting for us across the country.

You may notice that we send a lot of emails asking for your support — that’s because we win when everyone does what they can to help. Our organization depends on thousands of actual people who care about our democracy and want to see positive change in our communities and across our country by building power through investing in Democratic women. If you’d like to donate, click here.
