Friend,
This month is Black History Month, an opportunity to celebrate the many contributions and achievements of Black Americans throughout our nation’s history, history that is being made every day. I am proud to represent a community that is home to so many Black leaders. To learn more, you can click here to read several stories of Black leaders in the Lehigh Valley. ([link removed])
As we uplift the Black community, we must also grapple with the inequity and systemic racism that persists in our country to this very day.
Today especially, my heart is breaking for Tyre Nichols, one of the most recent unarmed Black Americans to be killed by police officers. I am thinking of Tyre’s family and the Memphis community as I urge for swift and unequivocal justice.
I am committed to fighting inequality every day in Congress. I was proud to support the Justice in Policing Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. I recognize as well that issues such as climate justice, education inequity, and soaring health care costs disproportionately affect Black communities on a daily basis – and you have my word that I will keep working every day towards real equality.
As an elected official, and as a concerned citizen, I am committed to supporting our Black communities and finding solutions. If you, like me, want to take action to be a part of the solution, I encourage you to consider making a donation to the NAACP to support their fight for civil rights. ([link removed])
We cannot turn a blind eye to these issues. I will not rest until we see liberation for our Black communities. I hope you will join me in this effort.
In solidarity,
Susan
