Oversight Subcommittee Chairmanship

This week, House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY-01), appointed me as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Operations and the Federal Workforce. The subcommittee has oversight and legislative jurisdiction over the federal civil services, government organizations and operations, and the relationship between the federal government to the states and municipalities.

I am thankful for Chairman Comer's full confidence in my leadership, and I will use all the tools at my disposal to make our federal government is more efficient, effective, and transparent to the American people. I share the same degree of confidence in his leadership of the full committee.

My charge as Chairman is to challenge the federal government and ensure they are working for the American people. Public trust in our federal institutions is at a historic low, in large part due to unaccountable and ineffective bureaucracy. This subcommittee will be at the forefront of challenging and ensuring the federal government will be dutiful, efficient, and present for the American people. Taxpayers should have confidence in the democratic process and know that the government is working in their best interest.

Ensuring our Nation's National Security

The current war in Ukraine has tremendous consequences for the global supply chain. No matter the amount of U.S. support in Ukraine, it is in our nation's interest to communicate with countries directly affected by the conflict and ensure that they have the knowledge and best practices to effectively combat encroachment from the West's enemies, including Russia and China. Even now, our enemies are actively attempting to destabilize the United States. Establishing a united front with our allies will ensure our shared security.

ImageThis week, Congressman Aderholt (AL-04) and I brought together representatives from 20 countries aligned with American interests for an inter-parliamentary forum on national security. Each country's delegation was given the opportunity to share their current efforts at maintaining sovereignty and their concern about predatory actions from Russia and the Chinese Community Party. My colleagues and I sought to affirm a posture of friendship and reduce damage from malicious regimes while holding them accountable.

Making our Communities More Accessible

Throughout my time in public service, one of my deepest convictions and missions has been to make communities more accessible to those with disabilities. This week, I was delighted to meet with folks from the National Federation of the Blind, including Lara Sowell from Nacogdoches. They believe that blindness does not define individuals' boundaries for achievement and advocate for the efforts of those moving forward after vision loss.

ImageOur discussions were related to web application accessibility for people with disabilities, access to home medical devices for blind and low-vision users, and work incentives for legally blind SSDI beneficiaries. They are true inspirations to me and the disability community. I look forward to continue work with organizations like the National Federation of the Blind as Congress deliberates on how to provide individuals with disabilities with the opportunities they need to succeed.
