Give Now to Protect America's Earned Benefits

Dear John,

Republican proposals to cut taxes for the wealthy and undermine Social Security and Medicare have come back like a bad dream with the GOP takeover of the House and the debt ceiling standoff …

One of the more alarming measures now getting resurrected is something called the Fair Tax Act (H.R. 25), which is frankly anything but fair. This proposal replaces all federal taxes with a national sales tax as high as 30%. Not only is that extremely regressive, because it would hit lower income people the hardest, but it would eliminate the payroll taxes that fund Social Security and Medicare!

According to U.S. Representative Randy Weber (TX-14), “It’s an interesting idea … if everybody pays in a portion, everybody has his skin in the game.”

Yet, all current retirees would be forced to pay for their benefits twice — once through the payroll taxes they already paid through their working lives and again every time they buy a loaf of bread or pay for a prescription. And it would shift a greater share of the tax burden from the wealthy to workers and retirees!

The Fair Tax Act is is just one of many dangerous proposals that could devastate seniors’ earned benefits now gaining support in Congress. That’s why the National Committee needs your help to mobilize our strongest membership base ever to counter threats, like the Fair Tax Act, that would undermine your retirement security and benefit the wealthiest Americans.

We need you and all workers and retirees who have a stake in the outcome of these looming battles over the future of Social Security and Medicare to support our urgent advocacy, media and public outreach work to protect your earned benefits.

Any gift, in any amount you can afford to donate, will be greatly appreciated and go to the frontlines of the National Committee’s full-scale battle to stop right-wing politicians from destroying our nation’s safety net programs while they keep cutting taxes for the wealthy.

Sincerely,

Max Richtman
President & CEO
