Two Trade Deals This Week!
|
This week marked another milestone in President Trump’s goal to improve the lives of American citizens. The United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA) passed the Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support on Thursday, January 16. This trade agreement will replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which has not been updated since the 1990s, and expand markets for farmers, manufacturers, businesses and workers.
While NAFTA prompted the loss of 700,000 jobs by moving production facilities outside of the United States, the USMCA will encourage greater domestic production by promoting free trade, economic growth and continued cooperation between the United States, Mexico and Canada. Specifically, Wisconsin's world-famous dairy industry will benefit from the USMCA trade agreement because Wisconsin dairy farmers will be able to export the equivalent of 3.6% of Canada’s dairy market, more than tripling the existing level of approximately 1%. Additionally, there are 231,000 Wisconsin jobs and nearly 11 billion dollars in Wisconsin exports to Canada and Mexico that will be provided a better playing field.
In addition to the Senate’s passage of the USMCA, President Trump also signed phase 1 of the U.S. trade deal with China. For years, China has created an unfair advantage for itself with unethical trade practices and currency manipulation. This created a situation that, while the U.S. was able to trade with China, put Americans at a disadvantage because of Chinese foul play. This new agreement will reduce U.S. tariffs on certain Chinese imports and increase the volume of U.S. exports.
On exports, in 2017, China purchased roughly $185 billion of U.S. goods and services. Under this new agreement, China has committed to increase these purchases by $200 billion over the next two years. The deal stipulates that China will buy $77 billion in additional goods and services in 2020 and $123 billion in 2021 in order to fulfill the $200 billion increase. Specifically, on agricultural products, China has agreed to increase purchases by 66 percent over the next two years. This means that U.S. farmers, workers and businesses will begin to see increased demand, putting more money into the pockets of our citizens. The deal also marks an important step in stopping China’s practice of currency manipulation as the agreement prohibits them from unfairly devaluing its currency in order to lower the value of goods.
I applaud President Trump for his leadership on the USMCA and am glad that we have a President who is willing to tackle issues that his predecessors, of both parties, refused to address. Along with a booming economy and record-low unemployment, I am happy that we can continue to deliver victories for the American economy and our workers.

Over 230 years ago on January 16, the Virginia Statue for Religious Freedom, authored by Thomas Jefferson, passed the Virginia General Assembly. For this reason, since 1993, every President of the United States has issued a proclamation to designate January 16 as Religious Freedom Day. Religious Freedom Day not only commemorates the passage of the Virginia Statue for Religious Freedom, but calls our nation to forever protect the unalienable right to religious freedom for all people.
Many of America's first settlers came to the United States to flee religious persecution. That is why our Founding Fathers sought to create a nation in which individuals and families could practice their chosen religion freely, without government interference. Like our Founding Fathers, I believe it is vital to ensure that all Americans enjoy the right to exercise their chosen religion. Tragically, those that would prefer an America where prayers are only spoken in private, school children grow up ignorant of the basic facts of various religions and militant special interest groups can force individuals to violate their conscience in the name of false tolerance, are gaining strength in our society.
Still, there is hope for the preservation of religious freedom in the United States. In honor of Religious Freedom Day 2020, nine federal agencies under President Donald Trump's leadership enacted rules to safeguard the constitutional rights of religious organizations. These rules will provide for the undue defense of First Amendment freedoms, the removal of regulatory burdens on faith-based institutions and the establishment of programs that ensure religious organizations are treated fairly in all circumstances. There are also provisions to ensure that religious and non-religious organizations receive equal consideration when applying for federal grants. With these rules, preserving the right to religious liberty in Wisconsin's Sixth District and throughout our great nation is more than possible.
I am thankful that the Trump Administration continues to work to maintain the integrity of our Constitution’s guarantee of religious liberty for you and your family. Likewise, I will always fight to protect your right to religious freedom in Congress. Ultimately, it is my hope that the religious freedom that our country was founded on endures for every generation to come.

While many people claim we live in a society that embraces diversity and tolerance, prejudice and bigotry remain towards certain groups of people. For example, Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI), at the end of 2018, used their official roles to try to bring down a judicial nominee for being a member of the Knights of Columbus. Likewise, similar statements attacking the Knights have arose from my fellow Members of Congress. It is a shame that an organization that advocates for the preservation of Christian values and does so much good throughout our society has been repeatedly denounced publicly.
As you may know, the Knights of Columbus were founded as a Catholic organization in 1882. To this day, there are approximately two million Knights, largely across the United States, but also in Canada, Britain, New Zealand and other countries. In Wisconsin's Sixth District, the Knights of Columbus generously give their time and talents to help not only individuals who are Catholic, but everybody.
The Knights bring communities together by hosting fundraising events such as chili suppers, meat raffles, fish frys and bowling tournaments. The Knights also give back through running brat stands at Piggly Wiggly and volunteering at concession stands at Packers games. Most importantly, the fundraisers hosted by the Knights benefit great organizations such as the Special Olympics and Coats for Kids. Additionally, Knights help local food pantries, pregnancy health centers and veterans with cancer.
Rather than hatred, it is evident that the Knights are men of Christ who deserve honor for their contributions to our communities. That is why I have deep respect for the Knights and will defend their right to continue having a positive impact on our communities. I offer my sincere thanks to the Knights for all they do for the Sixth District and worldwide.
I was privileged to discuss the honorable work of the Knights of Columbus from the House floor. Please watch my comments by clicking on the picture below.

Great discussion about the wall and national security at this morning's Border Security Caucus meeting. Thanks to Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost and Acting Deputy Chief Rodney Scott for giving us an update on the crisis at the border and what Congress can, and needs to, do to help.
January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. We must continue to shed light on the horrors of human trafficking to make freedom possible for the 24.9 million enslaved individuals worldwide.
Great discussion with Waushara County Administrator Robert Sivick about the needs of Wisconsin's counties and how we can continue to grow our state's booming economy.
It's important to donate blood year-round because of the consistent need. That's why I visited The Community Blood Center in Oshkosh last week.
